In short

Read a short reply with the question before it and the words after it. Ouais is an informal yes, bof gives a lukewarm reaction, and tant mieux welcomes good news. A following mais or si often carries the detail you need.

What do bof, ouais and tant mieux mean?

Le programme du samedi
  1. Nora

    Tu comprends le programme ?

    Do you understand the programme?

  2. Sam

Oui, mais je ne pourrai pas venir.

Yes, but I won’t be able to come.

  3. Nora

D’accord. Tu veux que je t’envoie les photos après ?

All right. Would you like me to send you the photos afterwards?

Sam confirms understanding, then rules out attendance. Translate the whole reply: “Yes, I understand, but I can’t come.” The first oui answers Tu comprends ?; it says nothing about accepting an invitation.

Tant mieux, on aura le temps de dîner. That’s good; we’ll have time for dinner.Work out the dinner plan.

Ouais fits an informal conversation with friends. For a straightforward reply at a ticket desk, choose oui. Read enthusiasm from the whole exchange: Ouais, avec plaisir ! is warm; Oui, mais seulement une heure accepts with a limit.

Une bonne nouvelle
  1. Lina

Le concert commence à vingt heures, pas à dix-neuf heures.

The concert starts at eight, not seven.

  2. Adam

Tant mieux ! On aura le temps de dîner avant.

That’s good! We’ll have time for dinner first.

  3. Lina

    On mange où ?

    Where shall we eat?

Adam welcomes the later start. He also suggests dinner before the concert. Lina’s question fills the remaining gap: the place. You can ask À quelle heure ? for a time or Tu viens avec nous, alors ? to confirm attendance.
