In short
Bof is a familiar, lukewarm reaction: “meh”, “so-so” or “not great”. After an invitation, it can show reluctance. Listen to the words that follow: Bof, pourquoi pas leaves room for acceptance; Bof, je préfère autre chose gives an alternative.

- Lina
Tu as aimé le film d’hier ?
English
Did you like yesterday’s film?
- You
Bof, je l’ai trouvé un peu long.
Give a lukewarm response and say the film felt a bit long.
English
Not much. I found it a bit long.
- Lina
Tu n’as rien aimé ?
English
Didn’t you like anything?
- You
Si, les images sont belles. Mais l’histoire avance lentement.
Correct the negative suggestion: you liked the images, but the story moves slowly.
English
Yes, the images are beautiful. But the story moves slowly.
- Lina
Moi, j’ai surtout aimé la fin. On le regarde encore ce soir ?
English
I especially liked the ending. Shall we watch it again tonight?
- You
Bof, je préfère regarder autre chose.
Show little enthusiasm and suggest watching something different.
English
Well, I’d rather watch something else.
- Lina
Une comédie, alors ?
English
A comedy, then?
- You
Oui, volontiers. Tu en connais une bonne ?
Accept willingly and ask whether Lina knows a good comedy.
English
Yes, gladly. Do you know a good one?
- Lina
Oui, j’en ai une en tête.
English
Yes, I have one in mind.
- You
D’accord, on essaie celle-là.
Agree to try the comedy.
English
All right, let’s try that one.
The first bof introduces a mixed review: the film felt long, but the images were beautiful. The second gives a preference against watching it again. The final volontiers accepts a different suggestion more positively.
How do you answer bof in French?
| Reply | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Bof, pourquoi pas, si tu veux. | Well, why not, if you want. | Reluctant acceptance is possible. |
| Bof, je préfère autre chose. | Well, I’d prefer something else. | Look for another option. |
| Bof, je n’ai pas très envie. | Well, I don’t really feel like it. | The speaker shows reluctance. |
A bare Bof leaves the listener with little detail. Add a reason for a review: Bof, c’était un peu long. Add a preference for a plan: Bof, je préfère rester ici. The whole reply is easier to translate than the reaction alone.
Je ne suis pas très enthousiaste.
I’m not very enthusiastic.
A fuller, neutral way to express a lukewarm reaction. Bof is shorter and more familiar.
When someone asks about their own work, a bare bof can sound dismissive. A concrete comment gives them more to use: Le début est clair, mais la fin est un peu longue. In a relaxed chat about a film, a quick bof can simply introduce your opinion.
