Why does French use le or la with body parts?

Je me lave les mains, puis je me brosse les dents.

I wash my hands, then brush my teeth.

These two actions use a reflexive pronoun and a definite article: me with les mains or les dents. You will also meet possessives in descriptions: Ses mains sont propres. The noun keeps its gender whoever it belongs to: la main is always feminine in these examples.
