Find:
| Full form | Short form | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| un restaurant | un resto | des restos |
| un cinéma | un ciné | des cinés |
| un appartement | un appart | des apparts |
| un vélocipède | un vélo | des vélos |
| une photographie | une photo | des photos |
| le métropolitain | le métro | les métros |
Learn the gender with the word: un vélo, but une photo. Keep the accent in ciné, vélo and métro, and the final t in appart. The plural endings are ordinary -s. A short form still needs the right article and adjective agreement.
- Nora
On va au ciné, puis au resto ?
Shall we go to the cinema, then a restaurant?
- Samir
D’accord. Je passe d’abord à mon appart.
OK. I’ll stop by my flat first.
- Nora
On se retrouve devant le cinéma à dix-neuf heures ?
Shall we meet outside the cinema at seven?
- Samir
Parfait. Je viens à vélo.
Perfect. I’ll come by bike.
The conversation uses both ciné and cinéma for the same place. The full word fits a friendly exchange too. For a housing enquiry, appartement gives you a useful neutral choice: Je voudrais visiter cet appartement. Short forms are established words; each has its own spelling and usage.
