In short
Practise stem pairs: que je prenne but que nous prenions, qu’elle vienne but que vous veniez. The singular stem cannot simply be copied into every form. Use il faut que throughout this drill so you can concentrate on the verb form.

| Infinitive | je | nous | vous |
|---|---|---|---|
| finir | finisse | finissions | finissiez |
| prendre | prenne | prenions | preniez |
| venir | vienne | venions | veniez |
| boire | boive | buvions | buviez |
| aller | aille | allions | alliez |
| pouvoir | puisse | puissions | puissiez |
For many verbs, the present indicative helps you see both stems. Ils prennent gives prenn-; nous prenons gives pren-. Use prenn- with the singular subjects and ils/elles, but pren- with nous/vous. The same comparison helps with viennent/venons and boivent/buvons.
Il faut qu’elle vienne, mais il faut aussi que nous venions.
She needs to come, but we also need to come.
The clause opening stays the same while the subject makes the stem change visible.
Keep irregular models beside these pairs. Aller gives aille but allions/alliez. Pouvoir keeps puiss- throughout the subjunctive. The everyday present forms vais and peux alone cannot supply these subjunctive models.
| Subject | être | avoir |
|---|---|---|
| je | sois | aie |
| tu | sois | aies |
| il / elle / on | soit | ait |
| nous | soyons | ayons |
| vous | soyez | ayez |
| ils / elles | soient | aient |
The usual endings are -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent, but être and avoir have the special forms shown here. In the drill, type only the missing verb. The clause already supplies que, the subject and any elision, as in il faut que j’….

How do you form the subjunctive stem in French?
First compare the stem; then compare the ending. If you wrote prennions, the ending belongs to nous but the stem belongs to the singular. If you wrote nous preniez, the stem is right but the ending belongs to vous. These call for different comparisons when you try again.
