Prenions, veniez, buvions: French subjunctive nous and vous

Practise the stem changes in prenions, veniez and buvions, then check étudiions and travailliez in twelve focused sentence gaps.

In short

For prendre, venir and boire, the subjunctive stem changes with nous and vous: je prenne → nous prenions, je vienne → vous veniez, je boive → nous buvions. Add -ions or -iez to the stem from the present nous form.

Study first: compare the two present forms

The present indicative supplies two useful stems
InfinitivePresent ilsSubjunctive jePresent nousSubjunctive nous / vous
prendreils prennentque je prennenous prenonsque nous prenions / que vous preniez
venirils viennentque je viennenous venonsque nous venions / que vous veniez
boireils boiventque je boivenous buvonsque nous buvions / que vous buviez

Remove -ons from prenons, venons or buvons, then add the ending. Pren- + -ions gives prenions, with one n before -ions. The double n in prenne and vienne belongs to the other subject group.

Why do nous and vous look like the imparfait in the subjunctive?

Il faut que nous prenions une décision. We need to make a decision.

Focus: present subjunctive after a necessity expression

Il faut que nous prenions une décision demain.
We need to make a decision tomorrow.

Nous prenions une décision chaque lundi. We used to make a decision every Monday.

Focus: imparfait describing a past habit

À cette époque, nous prenions une décision chaque lundi.
At that time, we used to make a decision every Monday.

Il faut que nous étudiions la question et que vous travailliez ensemble.

We need to study the question, and you need to work together.

Étudi- + -ions gives étudiions, with two consecutive i letters. Travaill- + -iez gives travailliez.

This stem method works for the three verbs in the table. Keep the irregular models soyons, ayons and fassions separate. In the drill, all gaps follow subjunctive openings. Write just the missing verb; the surrounding sentence already supplies its subject and meaning.
