In short
Move the main events from passé simple to passé composé, and keep background and earlier events in their roles. A hope such as elle espérait que Sami viendrait stays a hope in the retelling.

Read the scene before playing the narrator
Léa opened the notebook she had received the day before. An envelope was tucked between two pages. It contained a letter and a key. Léa read the letter and smiled. She hoped that Sami would come.
Receiving the notebook comes first. Opening it, reading and smiling are the narrated events; the envelope’s position and contents form the background.

Now play the narrator. Your partner asks for the next detail; your lines retell the same scene in everyday past forms. Use practice mode to hide your replies and speak from the English cue. Keep each object and actor in place as you answer.

How do you retell a literary past in everyday French?
Léa a lu la lettre. → Elle l’a lue.
Léa read the letter. → She read it.
L’ replaces the feminine direct object la lettre before the verb, so lue takes e.
The receiving still precedes the opening. Choose a viewpoint for the sequence, then check each action against it.
