In short
Use -ions with nous and -iez with vous. When the stem already ends in i, keep it: étudi- + -ions → étudiions, cri- + -iez → criiez. The two written letters come from the stem and ending.

| Present | Stem | Imparfait |
|---|---|---|
| nous parlons | parl- | nous parlions |
| vous parlez | parl- | vous parliez |
| nous étudions | étudi- | nous étudiions |
| vous criez | cri- | vous criiez |
| nous oublions | oubli- | nous oubliions |
| vous oubliez | oubli- | vous oubliiez |
Aujourd’hui, nous étudions le soir. Avant, nous étudiions le matin.
Today, we study in the evening. Previously, we used to study in the morning.
The present étudions is a correct word. For the past routine in the second sentence, the spelling needs two i letters: étudiions. Keep the same principle with crier and oublier. The first i belongs to the verb stem; the second starts the imparfait ending.
| Verb | nous in the imparfait | vous in the imparfait |
|---|---|---|
| être | nous étions | vous étiez |
| faire | nous faisions | vous faisiez |
| avoir | nous avions | vous aviez |
| manger | nous mangions | vous mangiez |
| commencer | nous commencions | vous commenciez |
Faire keeps the written stem fais-. With manger, the i already keeps the consonant soft, so use mangions and mangiez. With commencer, plain c before i gives commencions and commenciez. Double i is tied to a stem ending in i; it is not an extra letter for every verb.
Why is it nous étudiions with two i’s?
For each pair, preserve the subject and change only the tense. The first six gaps test a stem ending in i. The last two switch verb families, so check the written stem before adding the ending.
