French imparfait formation: stems and endings at a glance

Build the French imparfait from nous in the present. Use a compact stem-and-ending reference, then practise regular forms, être and spelling changes.

In short

Take the present nous form, remove -ons, and add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez or -aient. For être, start with ét- instead: nous étions.

L’imparfait · formation

1 · Find the present nous form

The present form gives the useful stem, including letters absent from the infinitive.

Nous finissons → finiss- → je finissais. We finish → stem finiss- → I used to finish.

Nous prenons → pren- → tu prenais. We take → stem pren- → you used to take.

2 · Attach the subject ending

Use one set of endings across the tense.

je / tu : -aisFirst and second person singular
il / elle / on : -aitThird person singular
nous : -ionsFirst person plural
vous : -iezSecond person plural
ils / elles : -aientThird person plural

3 · Give être its own stem

Use ét-, with the same six endings. Keep the accent.

J’étais calme. Nous étions disponibles.I was calm. We were available.

4 · Check the letters before the ending

The sound-preserving e or cedilla is needed before a, while a stem ending in i keeps that letter.

Je mangeais, nous mangions.I used to eat; we used to eat.

Je commençais, vous commenciez.I used to begin; you used to begin.

Nous étudiions, vous étudiiez. We used to study; you used to study.

Use the present nous form even for verbs whose other present forms look irregular: nous buvons → je buvais, nous faisons → je faisais. Starting from the infinitive alone would hide buv- and fais-. A plural noun subject such as les voisins takes the same ending as ils: les voisins parlaient.

À cette époque, nous travaillions ensemble.

At that time, we worked together.

The ending builds the form. The surrounding sentence gives its use: a past routine, a description or something in progress. Here the exercise asks specifically for the imparfait, so focus on the stem and subject ending.
