The singular present has no v: suis, suis, suit. The three plural forms bring it back: suivons, suivez, suivent. Keep that v in suivais, suivrai and suive. The future stem is suivr-; the conditional uses the same stem with -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.

Je suis une formation en ligne.

I’m taking an online training course.

Suivre un cours / une formation means taking or attending it. For a person, suivre quelqu’un means following them.

The passé composé uses avoir, even when following involves movement. With a direct object after the verb, keep the table’s participle: elle a suivi le cours. If a feminine direct object comes before it, agreement appears: la formation qu’elle a suivie.

What mistakes do learners make with suivre?

  • Nous suions les consignes.Nous suivons les consignes.

The present plural needs the v stem: suiv-.

  • Il suis les actualités.Il suit les actualités.

The third-person singular ends in -t; suis belongs to je and tu.

  • Elle est suivi le cours.Elle a suivi le cours.

The compound past of suivre uses avoir: a suivi.

Recall the forms

Use the tense in each cue. In the form checks, write only the verb form; in sentence gaps, include the auxiliary when the cue asks for the passé composé.
