How do you talk about your job in French?

Where and as what
PatternExampleEnglish
travailler chez + company / personJe travaille chez Airbus.I work at Airbus.
travailler dans + sector / placeElle travaille dans un hôpital. She works in a hospital.
travailler comme + job (no article)Il travaille comme serveur. He works as a waiter.
travailler à + time / placeJe travaille à temps partiel.I work part-time.
travailler sur + projectOn travaille sur un nouveau site. We're working on a new website.

To say your job, French drops the article: je suis professeur, elle est médecin. Le travail is work or a job, le boulot is the casual word, and un emploi or un poste sound more formal, as in job ads.

  • Je travaille comme un professeur.Je travaille comme professeur.

No article after comme for a job.

  • Je travaille à Renault.Je travaille chez Renault.

    Companies take chez.

  • Nous travaillions hier toute la journée.Nous avons travaillé toute la journée hier.

A finished, bounded action takes the passé composé.
