Avant que + subjunctive: eight forms to practise

Use avant que with its own subject and a subjunctive verb. Study soit, ait, vienne and puisse, then complete eight sentences and check the timeline.

In short

Use avant que + subject + subjunctive to say “before someone does something”: Appelle-moi avant que tu partes. The main action comes before the event in the avant que clause. With the same person doing both actions, avant de + infinitive is often simpler: Appelle-moi avant de partir.

Study first: forms you can see

Present subjunctive after avant que
InfinitiveSubjectClause
êtreelleavant qu’elle soit prête
avoirnousavant que nous ayons fini
venirilavant qu’il vienne
pouvoirvousavant que vous puissiez répondre
faireilsavant qu’ils fassent un choix
partirtuavant que tu partes

The time can be future even though the verb is in the present subjunctive: Je t’appellerai avant que tu partes. Write partes here. The main verb can also be past: Je l’ai appelé avant qu’il parte. The connector keeps its subjunctive pattern in both sentences.

avant de partirbefore leaving

Focus: One person does both actions.

avant de + infinitive

Léa vérifie les horaires avant de partir.
Léa checks the times before leaving.

avant que Paul partebefore Paul leaves

Focus: The clause names the person who leaves.

avant que + subject + subjunctive

Léa vérifie les horaires avant que Paul parte.
Léa checks the times before Paul leaves.

Do you need ne after avant que?

Je te préviendrai avant qu’il ne soit trop tard.

I’ll let you know before it is too late.

The formal ne is expletive here: it adds no negative meaning. Avant qu’il soit trop tard has the same timeline.

Keep que before tu, nous or a name: avant que Léa arrive. Elide it before il or elle: avant qu’il arrive. Arrive looks the same in the indicative and subjunctive, but the clause still uses the subjunctive. The forms soit, ayons and vienne make the mood easier to spot.

Complete the verb after avant que

Use the present subjunctive of the verb in brackets. Read each subject carefully: the verb in the gap agrees with the subject immediately before it, which can differ from the subject of the main action.
