Avant de and après avoir: practise putting two actions in order

Use avant de, après avoir and après être to connect two French actions. Compare the order, check the auxiliary and complete eight sentences with hints.

In short

Use avant de + infinitive for “before doing”: avant de partir. Use après + past infinitive for “after doing”: après avoir terminé, après être arrivée. In these personal sentences, the same person performs the infinitive and the main action.

avant de + infinitiveJe vérifie l’adresse avant de partir.Check the address → leave.
après avoir + participleAprès avoir vérifié l’adresse, je pars.Check the address → leave.
après être + participleAprès être arrivée, Nora téléphone.Nora arrives → Nora phones.
après + reflexive past infinitiveAprès s’être reposée, Nora repart.Nora rests → Nora leaves again.

The first two sentences describe the same order from different starting points. Avant de partir names the action that comes later. Après avoir vérifié names the completed action that comes first. A past infinitive can appear with a present or future main verb: Après avoir terminé, je partirai.

Après avoir or après être: which auxiliary?

Elle a terminé. → après avoir terminéShe has finished. → after finishing

Focus: avoir + past participle

Elle est arrivée. → après être arrivéeShe has arrived. → after arriving

Focus: être + feminine singular participle

Elles se sont reposées. → après s’être reposéesThey have rested. → after resting

Focus: a reflexive past infinitive with feminine plural agreement

Avant de elides to avant d’ before a vowel or mute h: avant d’entrer. After après, the auxiliary stays in the infinitive: avoir or être. With the arrival and return examples below, check the subject’s gender and number in the participle.

Complete the connector and verb phrase

Type everything needed between the printed words. The first group practises avant; the second practises après. Each hint gives the base verb, and the sentence supplies the person.

1 · Before: de + infinitive

  1. Avant , je vérifie l’adresse. (partir)
  2. Avant , Nora attend son tour. (entrer)
  3. Avant , nous relisons la question. (répondre)

2 · After: a completed earlier action

  1. Après son travail, Lina se repose. (terminer)
  2. Après à Lyon, Lina téléphone à sa sœur. (arriver)
  3. Après , elles prennent leur petit-déjeuner. (se lever)
  4. Après le courriel, ils attendent une réponse. (envoyer)
  5. Après chez elles, Léa et Inès préparent leur réunion. (rentrer)

What do you use when the subject changes after avant?

Avant que Nora parte, je lui donne mon numéro.

Before Nora leaves, I give her my number.

Here Nora leaves and je gives the number. The full clause names Nora and uses the subjunctive parte. In Je lui donne mon numéro avant de partir, the person leaving is je. The shorter phrase changes who does that action.

Avant le départ, je vérifie l’adresse.

Before departure, I check the address.

A noun uses another pattern: avant le départ, après la réunion. The de in avant de partir belongs to the infinitive construction.
