French active and passive voice: eight transformations to try

Change French active sentences into the passive while keeping the same tense and actor. Study three models, then practise être and participle agreement.

In short

To make a French passive, move the direct object to the front, add être in the original tense, and make the past participle agree with the new subject. Les étudiants organisent la réunion becomes La réunion est organisée par les étudiants.

Completed pastLe comité a publié le rapport.Le rapport a été publié par le comité.

Les bénévoles préparent la réunion. The volunteers are preparing the meeting.

Focus: the people doing the work

La réunion est préparée par les bénévoles. The meeting is being prepared by the volunteers.

Focus: the meeting receiving the action

In both sentences, the volunteers do the preparation. In the passive, la réunion becomes the grammatical subject, and par les bénévoles names the actor. The participle préparée agrees with feminine singular réunion, even if all the volunteers are men.

How do you form the passive voice in French?

  2. Les résultats par le comité. (Le comité publie les résultats.)

Lire le rapport has a direct object. Parler au directeur contains à: the director is an indirect complement. A mechanical transformation such as Le directeur est parlé fails. Keep Nora parle au directeur, or choose another construction that expresses your meaning.
