B1 French reading: a repair café’s busiest afternoon

Read a French repair café report with eight glosses and translation. Match objects to decisions and check the difference between a repair and a promise.

In short

A busy repair café needs more than quick hands. The volunteers examine each object, explain what they can do and decide what must wait. Match the problems to those decisions, using the report’s details.

Read it in English

On Saturday, fifteen people came through the community café’s door with an object under their arm. It was the busiest session since the café opened. At reception, Lucie recorded each fault and asked when it had appeared. The volunteers had organised three tables: sewing, wood and small appliances. The hardest part was giving everyone time to explain their problem.

A customer brought a coat whose zip would no longer do up. Samira, a former dressmaker, examined the mechanism. The zip needed replacing. The right length was unavailable, so she took measurements and offered another appointment. The customer left with the details needed to buy the part.

Nearby, Joël was working on a wobbly chair. A piece of wood had come unstuck. He reassembled the joint, then fitted a clamp. The owner wanted to leave with the chair immediately. Joël explained that the glue had to dry. They agreed that the owner would return the next day.

Finally, a radio remained silent. After examining it, Ana did not find the cause. She promised neither a quick repair nor an unnecessary replacement. She suggested asking another volunteer at the next session. At five, Lucie counted six repaired objects and five cases to return to. Four owners had chosen to consult a professional. The result therefore went beyond the number of successes: several people now knew which step to take.
