Réutiliser or recycler: complete a French workshop story

Follow a community workshop and fill eight gaps with reuse and recycling vocabulary. Compare the same object used again with material made into something new.

In short

Réutiliser means use again: the same object gets another use. Recycler means recycle: material is processed for another use.

Read it in English

On Saturday, Nora brings a box and two jars to the neighbourhood workshop. She does not want to throw them away. She decides to reuse the box to store pencils. Then she washes the jars and puts buttons in them. The same objects are used again: Nora reuses them.

Malik arrives with sheets printed on only one side. He uses the back to draw on. “We can reuse these sheets before throwing them away,” he says. Then he shows a video: in a factory, old paper is turned into pulp to make new sheets. The video explains how to recycle paper.

At the end, Nora presents the objects. “This box is reusable, and I have already reused it several times.” Malik shows a notebook whose cover says “Recycled paper”. He also reads the word “recyclable” on some packaging. The latter word describes a possibility; the former describes material already processed.
