Why does courir have two r’s in the future?
The present, imperfect and present subjunctive use the stem cour- with one r: nous courons, je courais, que je coure. The future and conditional use courr- with two: nous courrons, je courrais. All six persons keep that doubled r. The past participle is couru, with one r, and its auxiliary is avoir. A movement verb can use avoir: nous avons couru.
| French form | Tense | In a sentence |
|---|---|---|
| nous courons | present | Nous courons tous les dimanches. |
| nous courrons | future | Nous courrons dimanche prochain. |
| je courais | imperfect | Avant, je courais tous les jours. |
| je courrais | conditional | Je courrais si j’avais le temps. |
In the future, the double r replaces the infinitive ending: use courr- + -ai, giving courrai. The same stem takes the imperfect endings for the conditional: courr- + -ais gives courrais. The subjunctive returns to one r: Il faut que nous courions. Its nous and vous forms look like the imperfect, so the phrase before them supplies the meaning.
