In the present, nous croyons and vous croyez have y, but ils croient has i. Build the imparfait on croy- and keep both letters in nous croyions and vous croyiez. The subjunctive shares those two forms, while the other persons use croi- plus -e, -es, -e, -ent.

Belief stated; doubt expressed
FrenchHow the speaker presents it
Je crois qu’elle a raison.A belief stated: indicative.
Je ne crois pas qu’elle ait raison.Doubt expressed: subjunctive.

In the negative example, the speaker doubts the statement, so the subjunctive fits. The future and conditional of croire keep the stem croir-: je croirai versus je croirais. In the compound past, cru has no accent and no final -t.

What mistakes do learners make with croire?

  • Nous croions en toi.Nous croyons en toi.

Use croy- for nous and vous in the present.

  • Vous croyez que tout allait bien.Vous croyiez que tout allait bien.

For this past belief, the imparfait needs croy- + -iez.
