In short
Write je démens, tu démens, il dément, then nous démentons. The participle is démenti: elle a démenti cette annonce. Démentir takes the rejected claim directly. It reports a denial without by itself proving what actually happened.
Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

The singular present loses the final t of the plural stem in je and tu, but keeps it in il dément. The plural returns to dément- in démentons, démentez and démentent. This is not a finir-type -ir verb, so nous démentissons is not its standard form.

Useful objects include une rumeur, une annonce, une information and une accusation. Say démentir cette information, without à before the object. Un démenti is the related noun for a denial or rebuttal. La publication d’un démenti tells you that a response was issued; it does not replace the need to examine evidence when the facts are disputed.
Démentions has two possible grammatical roles
Hier, nous démentions cette rumeur. Il faut que nous la démentions encore aujourd’hui.
Yesterday, we were denying this rumour. We need to deny it again today.
The imperfect and subjunctive nous forms share the spelling démentions. The surrounding structure identifies the role: hier and the narrative frame support the first reading; il faut que requires the subjunctive in the second. An isolated ending cannot tell you everything about the sentence.
- Il démens cette annonce.Il dément cette annonce.
Third-person singular present ends in t, not s.
- Nous démentissons la rumeur.Nous démentons la rumeur.
The plural stem is dément- with -ons, not -issons.
- Elle a démentit la nouvelle.Elle a démenti la nouvelle.
The past participle démenti has no final t.
For practice, write a denial in your own voice with je, then report an organisation’s denial with elle. Change the second to the passé composé and keep the same direct object. This makes the singular spelling and participle easier to compare.
