Envisager conjugation: envisageons and envisagerai without a lost e

Conjugate envisager in seven tenses, retain ge before a and o, and choose between envisager un projet and envisager de partir.

In short

Keep ge before a or o: nous envisageons, j’envisageais. Before i, use nous envisagions. The future is j’envisagerai, keeping the infinitive stem. Say envisager un projet with a noun, or envisager de changer before an infinitive.

Envisager means considering a possibility, not deciding or completing it. Its -ger spelling follows the same sound-preserving pattern found in other -ger verbs. The table shows where the extra e is needed and where the following i or e already supplies the relevant spelling environment.

The ge pattern in these forms
FormSpelling environment
envisageonsge before o
envisageaisge before a
envisagionsg before i; no extra e
envisageraiThe infinitive stem envisager- is retained

The imperfect does not keep an extra e in every person. Compare j’envisageais with nous envisagions and vous envisagiez. In the future, do not form a shortened envisagr- stem: envisager- remains intact before the endings. The past participle envisagé carries the final accent.

A noun directly, an infinitive with de

envisager une reconversionto consider a career change

Focus: The noun group is the direct object.

Elle envisage une reconversion.
She is considering a career change.

envisager de se reconvertirto consider retraining

Focus: De introduces the infinitive action.

Elle envisage de se reconvertir.
She is considering retraining.

Envisager does not make the next step certain. The person may compare options before choosing one. Preserve that status in a summary: elle envisage de partir is not equivalent to elle a décidé de partir. The construction names a considered action without saying the decision has been made.

  • Nous envisagons cette solution.Nous envisageons cette solution.

Keep ge before the o in -ons.

  • Nous envisageions un changement.Nous envisagions un changement.

Before i in -ions, do not add the extra e.

  • J’envisage à reprendre mes études.J’envisage de reprendre mes études.

The infinitive construction uses envisager de, not envisager à.
