Finir or partir? Sort -ir verbs by their pattern

Nous finissons but nous partons: sort sixteen -ir verbs into the finir group (-iss-) and the partir group, then conjugate them correctly.

In short

French -ir verbs follow two patterns. Like finir, most add -iss- in the plural: nous finissons, ils choisissent. Like partir, a smaller group drops the last consonant in the singular and has no -iss-: je pars, nous partons.

There's no spelling rule to tell the groups apart, but meaning helps: many finir-type verbs come from adjectives (grand → grandir, rouge → rougir, maigre → maigrir). The partir group is small and mostly about movement and senses (partir, sortir, dormir, sentir, servir).
