Franchement or honnêtement: give a candid opinion in French

Practise frankly and honestly in a French conversation about a presentation. Compare opinions, direct speech and honest behaviour with examples.

In short

Franchement and honnêtement can both introduce a candid opinion: “frankly” and “honestly”. Franchement highlights directness; honnêtement highlights sincerity. In other positions, they can describe how someone speaks or acts.

Your part: give clear, useful feedback

Nora asks you to read her presentation. In practice mode, say your replies from the English cues. Your first reply gives a judgement and a reason; your second admits a gap in your knowledge.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Nora

Tu as lu mon introduction ?

    English

    Have you read my introduction?

  2. You

Oui. Franchement, je la trouve très claire. On comprend tout de suite le sujet.

Say frankly that the introduction is clear, then explain why.

    English

Yes. Frankly, I find it very clear. You understand the topic straight away.

  3. Nora

Et les chiffres ? Ils sont à jour ?

    English

And the figures? Are they up to date?

  4. You

Honnêtement, je ne sais pas. Je n’ai pas vérifié la date.

Admit honestly that you do not know; you have not checked the date.

    English

    Honestly, I don’t know. I haven’t checked the date.

  5. Nora

D’accord. Tu changerais quelque chose ?

    English

    OK. Would you change anything?

  6. You

Je raccourcirais la conclusion. Elle répète la même idée trois fois.

Suggest shortening the conclusion and give the reason.

    English

I would shorten the conclusion. It repeats the same idea three times.

  7. Nora

Merci de me parler franchement. Je vais la reprendre.

    English

Thanks for speaking frankly to me. I’m going to rework it.

  8. You

Avec plaisir. Le début est franchement réussi !

What is the difference between franchement and honnêtement?

FrenchUseNatural English
Franchement, je préfère le début.Introduces a candid opinion.Frankly, I prefer the beginning.
Elle me parle franchement.Describes how she speaks. She speaks openly to me.
Le début est franchement réussi.Strengthens an evaluation. The beginning is really good.
Honnêtement, je ne sais pas.Introduces a sincere admission.Honestly, I don’t know.
Elle a agi honnêtement.Describes her behaviour. She acted honestly.

At the start of je préfère le début, either adverb works. You can say Honnêtement, je préfère le début. In agir honnêtement, the point is honest behaviour. A mechanical swap to franchement loses that meaning.

Franchement, ce passage est trop long. On pourrait enlever le deuxième exemple.

Frankly, this passage is too long. We could remove the second example.

The concrete suggestion makes the feedback useful. The candid opening still leaves the criticism direct.
