Writing a French abstract: a longer report into four sentences

Turn a French report into a compact abstract. Follow a worked source, a four-part summary sheet, a model and questions on accurate condensation.

In short

For this report, a useful abstract keeps four things: the question, the comparison, the main result and the limit. Write Ce rapport compare…, then state what was measured, what changed and how far the finding reaches.

Du rapport au résumé

1 · Name the purpose

Begin with the work itself. Give the reader the question or object of study.

Ce rapport compare deux dispositifs de signalisation. This report compares two sign arrangements.

2 · Keep the method that explains the result

Retain the comparison and the time frame. They tell the reader what the finding rests on.

The trial concerns locating three rooms over one week.

3 · State the measured outcome

Keep temps de recherche. Replacing it with general satisfaction changes the outcome.

Search times are shorter with the second arrangement.

4 · Carry the limit into the short version

Give the missing follow-up its place beside the result. Cut descriptive detail before cutting a qualification that changes the conclusion.

The lack of extended follow-up limits the finding’s reach.

The cultural centre wants to make its rooms easier to find from the entrance courtyard. A team compared two sign arrangements over one week. The first grouped the directions on a board at the entrance; the second added arrows where visitors had to change direction. The trial covered three workshop rooms.

The team recorded the time needed to find each room with both arrangements. Observed times were shorter with the second. The report presents this as a finding limited to the routes and conditions of this trial. It also describes the courtyard and the materials used, to help the reader understand the installation.

The evaluation covered search time only. It included neither a satisfaction questionnaire nor long-term follow-up. The report therefore cannot show whether the observed difference persists over the months. It proposes extending observation before deciding on a permanent installation.

This report compares two sign arrangements for locating three rooms in a cultural centre. Over one week, the team records search times with each arrangement. Observed times are shorter with the second, which adds arrows at changes of direction. This result remains limited to the trial conditions; its persistence over the long term remains to be evaluated.

Question 1No account needed
Which result sentence matches the report?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The measured outcome is search time during the trial; satisfaction and lasting preference were not measured.

Question 2No account needed
You must shorten the abstract further. Which edit best preserves its meaning?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Remove the description of the arrows and keep the trial’s duration and limit.. The visual detail can be compressed while the duration and limit still explain the finding.

Question 3No account needed
Which final sentence accurately keeps the time limit?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The source has no long-term follow-up, so persistence remains a question.
