French writing coherence: fix the link before adding connectors
Compare two French recommendations, repair an unclear reference and choose connectors that express a real cause, contrast or consequence.
In short
A connector names a relationship between ideas. First make that relationship clear, then choose donc for a consequence, parce que for a reason or cependant for a contrast. Also check what ce problème and cette solution refer to.

Focus: a cause presented as a contrast
Le cours du mardi finit à 20 heures. Cependant, je rentre après 21 heures. En outre, je préfère le cours du samedi.
The Tuesday course ends at 8 pm. However, I get home after 9 pm. Furthermore, I prefer the Saturday course.

Focus: schedule → journey → recommendation
Le cours du mardi finit à 20 heures. Comme le trajet dure plus d’une heure, je rentre après 21 heures. Le cours du samedi finit à 16 heures. Je préfère donc celui du samedi.
The Tuesday course ends at 8 pm. As the journey takes more than an hour, I get home after 9 pm. The Saturday course ends at 4 pm. I therefore prefer the Saturday one.
The second version supplies the journey time and the Saturday finish time. Those details explain the late return on Tuesday and support the Saturday recommendation. In the first version, cependant signals a contrast the paragraph has yet to explain; en outre adds a preference without showing its reason. The revision improves the chain of ideas as well as the linking words.
How do you make your French writing coherent?
- Nora
J’ai écrit : « Le prix est élevé et le cours finit tard. Ce problème me gêne. »
I wrote: “The price is high and the course finishes late. This problem bothers me.”
- Alex
Tu parles du prix ou de l’horaire ?
Do you mean the price or the timetable?
- Nora
De l’horaire. Je vais préciser : « Cette fin tardive complique mon retour. »
The timetable. I’ll make it clear: “This late finish makes my journey home difficult.”
Nora’s original ce problème could refer to the price, the late finish or both. The revised phrase names the relevant point. A connector added before that vague reference would leave Alex with the same question. Clear reference helps the reader follow the argument from one sentence to the next.
