Dialogue

French speaking: develop a point, then respond to a partner

Compare a short French monologue with a scheduling dialogue. Practise responsive replies, clarification and confirmation, then review each kind of speaking.

In short

A monologue develops a point for a listener; an interaction also changes with your partner’s replies. Review a monologue for its position, reasons and examples. Review an exchange for how each turn answers a question, handles a constraint or checks agreement.

I prefer working in a group. First, other people give me ideas. For example, last week a friend helped me find a better conclusion. That said, I find it easier to write in a quiet setting. So I suggest discussing things together, then each writing separately.

The speaker states a preference, illustrates it, adds a limit and makes a proposal. The example is spoken by Paul.

How do you respond to a partner in a French speaking exam?

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Camille

Jeudi à dix-huit heures, ça vous convient ?

    English

Does Thursday at six suit you?

  2. Paul

Je ne suis pas disponible jeudi. Est-ce que vendredi serait possible ?

Explain that Thursday is impossible and suggest Friday.

    English

I’m not available on Thursday. Would Friday be possible?

  3. Camille

Vendredi, oui, mais seulement après dix-neuf heures.

    English

Friday, yes, but only after seven.

  4. Paul

D’accord. On pourrait commencer à dix-neuf heures trente.

Take account of the seven o’clock limit and suggest half past seven.

    English

All right. We could start at half past seven.

  5. Camille

Ça me va. Vous souhaitez travailler combien de temps ?

    English

That suits me. How long would you like to work?

  6. Paul

Give a duration and divide it into discussion and writing.

    English

About an hour: half an hour to discuss things and half an hour to write.

  7. Camille

    English

Do you want us to write the same text?

  8. Paul

Clarify that each person will write their own text.

    English

No, I was thinking of one text each, using the group’s ideas.

  9. Camille

    English

Very good. I’ll send you the connection link on Friday morning.

  10. Paul

Donc, vendredi de dix-neuf heures trente à vingt heures trente, c’est bien cela ?

Check the day, start and finish before closing.

    English

So, Friday from half past seven to half past eight, is that right?

  11. Camille

    Oui, c’est bien cela.

    English

    Yes, that’s right.

  12. Paul

    Parfait, à vendredi !

    Close after the confirmation.

    English

    Perfect, see you on Friday!

Question 1No account needed
Your partner is available only after seven. Which reply fits?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

D’accord, dix-neuf heures trente ?. Half past seven respects the stated availability. Half past six is too early, and Thursday has already been rejected.

Question 2No account needed
What does the question Vous voulez qu’on écrive le même texte ? call for?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Clarification of the proposed writing activity. Camille is checking what Paul means by writing together. A clear answer about one text each resolves that uncertainty.

Question 3No account needed
Which line confirms the final arrangement?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Oui, c’est bien cela.. The final oui accepts the read-back. The earlier question only proposes Friday and still awaits a response.
