| General rule | One friend | A group |
|---|---|---|
| Il faut patienter. | Tu dois patienter. | Vous devez patienter. |
| Il ne faut pas insister. | Tu ne dois pas insister. | Vous ne devez pas insister. |
The il in il faut does not name a person. Choosing tu or vous names the listener who must act. In this exercise, the negative rules mean “must not”: an action is prohibited. “You don’t have to” has a different meaning, often expressed by tu n’es pas obligé de or vous n’êtes pas obligés de.
Il faut se présenter. → Tu dois te présenter.
You have to introduce yourself. → You must introduce yourself.
The reflexive pronoun changes to match the listener.
Rewrite the complete rule using the listener given. Keep every time expression. With a reflexive infinitive, use te after tu dois and vous after vous devez. Before a vowel, te becomes t’, as in t’inscrire.
1 · Address one friend with tu
- Il faut arriver à l’heure. → (Begin Tu dois.)
- Il faut prévenir avant midi. → (Keep the deadline.)
- Il ne faut pas parler pendant l’exercice. → (This is a prohibition.)
- Il faut se présenter au début. → (Change the reflexive pronoun.)
- Il ne faut pas s’absenter sans prévenir. → (Use t’ before a vowel.)
- Il faut répondre avant vendredi. → (Keep avant vendredi.)
2 · Address a group with vous
- Il faut respecter les autres. → (Begin Vous devez.)
- Il ne faut pas interrompre. → (Keep ne … pas around devez.)
- Il faut se préparer avant de commencer. → (The second vous is reflexive.)
- Il ne faut pas arriver après neuf heures. → (Keep the prohibited arrival time.)
- Il faut s’inscrire avant lundi. → (Vous stays complete before inscrire.)
- Il ne faut pas se moquer des autres. → (Keep des autres.)
