Shorter French sentences: keep the actor clear

Compare full clauses with gérondifs, participles and past infinitives. Check who acts, what happens first and when a full clause reads more clearly.

In short

Before shortening two clauses, name the actor of each action and decide whether they overlap or happen in sequence. En relisant, Léa corrige une erreur gives both actions to Léa. If Sami does the rereading and Léa makes the correction, keep both actors explicit.

How do you make French sentences shorter?

Read each version as the same scene
Full versionShorter version

The opening en + present participle connects the actions. In these examples it means “while”. Keep the main subject close enough to identify the actor easily.

One actor, a completed first step

After checking the dates, Léa confirmed.

Focus: A clear sequence with a past infinitive

Ayant vérifié les dates, Léa a confirmé.Having checked the dates, Léa confirmed.

Focus: A more formal written participial opening

Both versions put the checking before the confirmation. Après avoir vérifié makes “after” explicit. Ayant vérifié gives a compact written version and can also suggest why Léa felt ready to confirm. Choose the phrasing that fits your message.

While Sami rereads the text, Léa prepares the reply.

Two people, two activities. The full clause names both.

For the scene above, the compressed version assigns the rereading to Léa. Restoring Sami preserves the two actors.

If Léa completed the revision, she must also be the subject attached to ayant terminé in this version.

A compact clause can have its own noun

Once the revision was finished, the manager congratulated Léa.

Here la révision is explicitly named inside the opening. Terminée agrees with that feminine noun.

People who are waiting for a reply can contact me. → People waiting for a reply can contact me.

The participle identifies the people. The full relative clause is often easier in everyday communication.

Keep a shorter version when…

A self-review aid, not a grade. Ticks are not saved.
