Name both actors

Expand en lisant into “while someone is reading”, then name that person. In standard edited prose, make the gérondif refer to the main subject. If the two actors differ, a full clause with its own subject gives you a clear repair.

While reading the message, Léa understood the problem.

Léa reads; Léa understands. The two actions share an actor.

Make the hidden subject visible
Short phraseExpanded meaningMain subject

Keep the reflexive pronoun: en se préparant becomes en me préparant when je is the actor. In j’en parle, en is a pronoun. In en lisant, it introduces the present participle. Only the second construction is a gérondif.

Repair an arriving message

The person arrives; the message waits. The quand clause gives arriver its own subject. Here, the speaker is male; a woman writes arrivée.

When I arrived, a message was waiting for me.

Focus: Keeps the message as the main subject and names the arriving person.

En arrivant, j’ai découvert un message. On arriving, I discovered a message.

Focus: Makes the arriving person the main subject. Use this version when you also mean to report discovering the message.

A passive sentence can still share the subject

While speaking, Léa was interrupted by Sami.

Léa speaks and Léa receives the interruption. Par Sami names the agent of the passive; the main subject remains Léa.

Compare En parlant, Sami a interrompu Léa. That sentence makes Sami the speaker. Moving the name changes the scene, even though both sentences are grammatical. Check who performs the secondary action after every rewrite.
