Le participe composé · fiche
1 · Choose the usual compound auxiliary
Start from the passé composé. Ayant and étant stay unchanged.
Having finished her speech, she left the room.
Having left early, they arrived before us.
2 · Keep the same actor
With an introductory group and no named subject inside it, attach both actions to the main subject. Here nous checks and sends.
Having checked the dates, we sent the invitations.
3 · Earlier than the main event
The completion is earlier relative to the main action. The main verb can refer to the past or to the future.
Having finished her placement, she will be able to start on Monday.
4 · Carry the reflexive pronoun
A pronominal verb keeps its pronoun before étant. Compare se lever with se laver les mains: the direct object after lavé keeps it unchanged.
S’étant levée tôt, Inès a préparé le petit-déjeuner.Having got up early, Inès prepared breakfast.
S’étant lavé les mains, Inès a commencé à cuisiner.Having washed her hands, Inès began cooking.
5 · An adjective gives a state
étant fatiguée describes how Léa feels at the time. étant rentrée presents her return as completed. Read the word after étant as well as the scene.
As she was tired, Léa preferred to stay at home.
6 · Use a full clause in conversation
The participial version suits compact written prose. A clause with après que, quand or comme often feels easier in a conversation.
As she had already read the text, she answered straight away.
