Agreement with avoir: find the object before adding -e or -s

Practise écrit or écrites, pris or prises: find the direct object, check its position and choose the past-participle ending in 12 sentences.

In short

With avoir, the past participle agrees with a direct object placed before it: les lettres que j’ai écrites. An object after it leaves the participle unchanged: j’ai écrit les lettres. Find what the verb acts on, then check where that object sits.

Study first: the same letters, three positions
SentenceDirect objectEnding
Elles ont écrit les lettres.les lettres — afterécrit
Les lettres qu’elles ont écrites…qu’ = les lettres — beforeécrites
Ces lettres, elles les ont écrites.les = les lettres — beforeécrites

Ask “wrote what?”: the letters. Elles names the writers, so it never supplies the ending here. In je leur ai écrit, “to whom?” identifies an indirect object. Leur supplies no agreement; neither does à qui in les personnes à qui j’ai écrit.

Four objects: keep the noun and its gender together

What? Before or after? Which ending?

La réponse gives écrite; les réponses gives écrites. Le message gives écrit; les messages gives écrits. With l’, recover the noun: la réponse, je l’ai écrite. The pronoun alone hides its gender. The rule also works with avait and aura: changing the auxiliary’s tense keeps the object relationship.

Fill each gap with the past participle of the verb in brackets. The person writing, reading or finding something may be feminine or plural; check the object separately. The last four sentences move the same decision into other compound tenses.

1 · Objects before and after

  1. Elles ont les réponses. (rédiger)
  2. Les réponses qu’elles ont sont claires. (rédiger)
  3. Ces messages, je les ai ce matin. (lire)
  4. À mes collègues, j’ai hier. (répondre)
  5. Cette décision, nous l’avons ensemble. (prendre)
  6. Nous avons cette décision ensemble. (prendre)
  7. Les personnes à qui elle a ont répondu. (écrire)
  8. Les consignes que tu as étaient précises. (suivre)

2 · The auxiliary changes; the object rule stays

  1. Les invitations qu’elle avait étaient arrivées. (envoyer)
  2. Elle avait les invitations lundi. (envoyer)
  3. Les exercices que vous aurez seront corrigés demain. (faire)
  4. La ville où nous avions avait changé. (travailler)

For participles followed by an infinitive, follow the related agreement page. Here the task is one verb and its object: où supplies a place, à qui an indirect complement, and que can carry the direct object. Adding an ending needs that grammatical link.
