French past infinitive: build avoir fait and être parti

Build the French past infinitive with avoir or être, then practise earlier actions, reflexive pronouns, negatives and participle agreement.

In short

The past infinitive is avoir or être + a past participle: avoir fait, être parti. The auxiliary stays in the infinitive, and the action is completed before another action or reference point.

How do you form the past infinitive in French?

Après avoir travaillé, nous nous reposons.

After working, we rest.

The work comes before the rest. The main verb can be present, past or future.

Je voudrais avoir terminé avant vendredi.

I would like to have finished before Friday.

Here the reference point is a future deadline.

Keep the surrounding expression: après avoir fini, but être content d’avoir fini. There is no de after après. In Je vous remercie d’avoir attendu, the people addressed did the waiting; the construction tells you who performed the action.

Where do pronouns go with a past infinitive?

Elle est contente de s’être reposée.

She is pleased to have rested.

Se reposer uses être; reposée agrees with elle.

Après s’être lavé les mains, elle est sortie.

After washing her hands, she went out.

Les mains follows as the direct object. Keep lavé unchanged.

With avoir, a preceding direct object can still trigger agreement: les réponses qu’elle regrette d’avoir données. For an ordinary negative, put ne pas before the auxiliary: de ne pas avoir répondu. Object pronouns come before it too: Merci de me l’avoir envoyé.
