Justify a French reading answer with the exact words that support it
Practise choosing short evidence from a French notice. Keep negatives, dates and conditions when explaining why your reading answer fits.
In short
Choose the shortest phrase that supports the whole answer. Keep the words that change its meaning: ne… pas, seulement, a date or a condition such as sur réservation.

L’atelier d’écriture a lieu mercredi à 18 h. Cette semaine seulement, il se déroule en ligne. La participation est gratuite, mais la réservation est obligatoire. Les personnes inscrites reçoivent le lien mardi.
The writing workshop takes place on Wednesday at 6 pm. This week only, it is held online. Participation is free, but booking is compulsory. Registered participants receive the link on Tuesday.
| Question | Short answer | Words that support it |
|---|---|---|
| When is the workshop? | Wednesday at 6 pm | mercredi à 18 h |
| Is booking optional? | No | la réservation est obligatoire |
| Is it always online? | The notice only specifies this week | Cette semaine seulement |
| Who receives the link? | Registered participants | Les personnes inscrites |
The word gratuite answers a price question. It does not answer the booking question. Likewise, Tuesday is the day the link arrives; Wednesday is the day of the workshop. Match the evidence to the action in the question.
How do you justify a reading answer in French?
Il faut réserver, car le texte précise : « La réservation est obligatoire. »
You have to book, because the text states: “Booking is compulsory.”
Cette semaine, l’atelier se déroule en ligne. Le texte ne précise pas le lieu des autres séances.
This week, the workshop is held online. The text does not specify the location of the other sessions.
For “Is the teacher a novelist?”, this notice gives no answer. Keep three possibilities available: the text supports the claim, contradicts it or leaves it open. A missing detail stays open. If the exercise offers only two options, follow its instructions and use your explanation to show what the passage actually says.
