French causal links: a reason, evidence or a conclusion?

Compare parce que, en effet and donc in a short planning exchange. See what each link supports, then test five readings of evidence and results.

In short

Parce que introduces a reason, en effet supports or explains the previous statement, and donc introduces a result or inference. Read the verbs too: nous pourrions proposes an option, while nous avons décidé reports a decision. A connector links the claims; the wording tells you how firm each claim is.

How do you tell a reason from a conclusion in French?

en effetindeed / the explanation is

Focus: Backwards: support for the previous claim

claim → en effet → support

La participation est faible. En effet, seules huit personnes se sont inscrites sur les vingt attendues.
Participation is low. Indeed, only eight people have registered out of the twenty expected.

doncso / therefore

Focus: Forwards: a result or inference from the previous claim

premise → donc → result or inference

Seules huit personnes se sont inscrites. Nous pourrions donc prolonger le délai.
Only eight people have registered. We could therefore extend the deadline.

parce quebecause

Focus: The reason given for an event or decision

event or decision → parce que → reason

Nous avons prolongé le délai parce que plusieurs personnes l’ont demandé.
We extended the deadline because several people requested it.

In the first example, the registration figure supports the judgement “participation is low”. In the third, requests are given as the reason for extending the deadline. Evidence for a judgement and a cause of an action are different relationships, even when both answer an English question beginning with “why”.

À la lumière de ces premiers résultats, cette option mérite une discussion.

In the light of these initial results, that option deserves discussion.

  4. Malik

Quoi qu’il en soit, nous devons répondre aux personnes déjà inscrites avant midi.

In any case, we must reply to those already registered before midday.

Four expressions that shape the reading
Words in the exchangeWhat they establish
sembleThe low participation is presented as an impression.
pourrions donc prolongerAn extension is proposed as a possible response.
à la lumière de ces premiers résultatsThe initial results are the basis for considering the option.
quoi qu’il en soitThe reply deadline stands whichever option is chosen.

A short summary can keep all four layers: “Eight registrations suggest low participation. Extending the deadline is an option for discussion; the organisers must reply to current participants before midday.” The exchange reports neither an agreed extension nor completed replies.
