Les affaires (plural) covers both business (le monde des affaires) and your belongings (prends tes affaires de sport). In the singular, une affaire is a deal or a matter, and in the news it's a scandal or legal case. La liaison is the right word for an extramarital relationship, and it's also the name of the sound link between words.
