在 a 前，用 ge 或 ç 保留辅音的软音：je mangeais, je commençais。在 -ions 和 -iez 的 i 前，直接用 g 或 c：nous mangions, vous commenciez。

Je mangeais lentement.我过去吃东西总是很慢。
词尾以 a 开头。在 g 后保留 e，以保持软音。
- nous mangionsnous mangeions我们过去常常吃／我们当时正在吃
Nous mangions ensemble.我们过去常常一起吃饭。
i 已能使 g 发软音。去掉多余的 e。
- elle commençaitelle commencait她过去常常开始／她当时正开始
Elle commençait à comprendre.她当时正开始理解。
软音符能让 c 在 a 前保持软音。elle 要用单数词尾 -ait。
- vous commenciezvous commençiez您过去常常开始／您当时正开始
Vous commenciez tôt.您过去总是很早就开始。
在 i 前，不带软音符的 c 已能发出所需的音。去掉软音符。

有四行的词尾以 a 开头：三个单数人称和 ils/elles。这些行需要 ge 或 ç。剩下的两行是 nous 和 vous，它们的词尾以 i 开头。这时就要去掉多余的 e 或软音符。
