When does connaître keep the circumflex?

These tables use traditional spelling: il connaît has î, as do the future and conditional stem connaîtr-. The nous, vous and ils/elles present forms all have -ss-. Keep that -ss- throughout the imperfect and present subjunctive: je connaissais, que je connaisse, que nous connaissions. The participle changes to connu, with two ns and no circumflex. In je connais Nora depuis deux ans, the present describes a connection that still continues: “I have known Nora for two years.”

connaîtreto know; to be familiar with

Focus: a person, a place or a noun

connaître + noun

Tu connais Camille ?
Do you know Camille?

Je connais cette chanson.
I know this song.

savoirto know a fact or know how

Focus: a fact, a question or a skill

savoir que / où / comment; savoir + infinitive

Je sais où Camille habite.
I know where Camille lives.

Elle sait conduire.
She knows how to drive.

The past tense changes the viewpoint. Je connaissais déjà Nora gives background: I already knew Nora. J’ai connu Nora à l’université places knowing her in a period of your life. To say when you first met her, use J’ai rencontré Nora à l’université.
