Expérience or expérimentation: three meanings in one French reading

Read about a gardening internship to distinguish acquired experience, a personal experience and an experiment, then compare expérience and expérimentation.

In short

Une expérience can be something you live through or an experiment; avoir de l’expérience means having experience gained through practice. Une expérimentation is experimentation or a trial, often presented as a testing phase.

Read it in English

Nora is starting an internship at a gardening workshop. She already has experience: for two years, she has helped her grandfather grow vegetables. But this is the first time she has worked with a group of pupils.

On Tuesday, Nora helps the group conduct an experiment. The pupils put two bean plants in different places: one near the window, the other at the back of the room. Every morning, Nora records their measurements and observations in a notebook.

The workshop is also testing a new way to organise sessions. During a one-month trial phase, each group chooses its activity in advance. The organiser then collects comments from the pupils and activity leaders.

At the end of the week, Nora writes in her review: “This internship is a rewarding experience. I’m learning to explain an activity and listen to the group’s questions.” In her CV, she adds a line under the heading “Professional experience”.

In a testing context, expérience and expérimentation can overlap. Expérience often names an experiment, while expérimentation brings the testing activity or trial phase into focus. The choice is about how the speaker presents the activity, rather than counting one test versus several tests. For practical knowledge, keep the useful phrase avoir de l’expérience en jardinage.
