A2 French reading: the same film scene, twice

Read Noé’s two viewings of a French film scene. Learn sous-titres, doublage and réplique, then compare what changes on the screen and in the sound.

In short

Les sous-titres are written words on the screen; le doublage replaces the voices. In this reading, Noé turns off the French subtitles for a second viewing and keeps the same French voices. One line becomes clearer.

Read it in English

Noé watches a short scene from a French film with his cousin. The first time, he turns on French subtitles. He reads the sentences on the screen, but some lines are difficult to understand. His cousin suggests watching the section again.

Before playing the video a second time, they discuss a sentence: “I’ll meet you at the exit.” Noé thinks the character wants to leave alone. “No,” his cousin explains. “He’s going to meet his friend at the exit.” Noé writes the sentence in his notebook.

The second time, he removes the subtitles. The voices stay in French: he keeps the same soundtrack. He recognises the sentence they have just read together more easily. Another line remains difficult. He pauses the video and asks, “Can you explain this sentence too?”
