Analysis or evaluation? Two jobs in French argument writing

Compare French analysis and evaluation using one short argument. Identify the reasoning, choose a criterion and practise writing a precise critical response.

In short

Analysis explains how an argument works: Le texte présente… comme… Evaluation judges its strength against a criterion: Cette conclusion est insuffisamment étayée, car… First identify the link between the evidence and the conclusion; then explain whether that link holds.

One argument to examine

Les demandes de réservation ont augmenté. Il faut donc construire une nouvelle salle.

Booking requests have increased. A new room must therefore be built.

What the two sentences give you
PartWordingRole
ObservationLes demandes de réservation ont augmenté.Demand is said to have risen.
LinkdoncThe writer presents the next statement as a consequence.
RecommendationIl faut construire une nouvelle salle.Construction is presented as necessary.

What is the difference between analysis and evaluation?

The text presents the rise in requests as a reason to build an additional room.

Focus: Analysis: names the observation and the conclusion.

The connector “therefore” links the observation to the recommendation.

This conclusion is insufficiently supported in the excerpt.

Focus: Evaluation: tests whether the support justifies the proposed solution.

The rise in requests is not enough to justify construction: the excerpt does not compare the possible solutions.

The criterion here is the sufficiency of the evidence for this particular recommendation. Increased demand gives a reason to investigate capacity. To establish that a new room is necessary, the argument also needs a comparison with other responses. Dans l’extrait keeps the judgement attached to the passage you have read.

    J’ai écrit : « Cet argument est faible. »

I wrote, “This argument is weak.”

    Faible sur quel point ?

    Weak in what respect?

  3. Maya

It moves from rising demand to just one solution, without examining the other possibilities.

That is the criterion to specify in your evaluation.

Put both jobs into one paragraph

The text presents the rise in requests as a reason to build an additional room. The phrase “must be built” presents this construction as necessary. Yet the excerpt offers no comparison with reorganising time slots. The recommendation therefore remains insufficiently supported.

The first two sentences analyse the wording and its effect. The final two evaluate the support. A scheduling change is an option to examine; the paragraph leaves its effectiveness open. That makes the criticism precise enough for a reader to test.

Question 1No account needed
Which sentence analyses the wording?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Le mot « donc » introduit la conséquence annoncée.. The first sentence identifies the function of donc. The other two judge the strength of the support.

Question 2No account needed
Which line gives a criterion for evaluation?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

A missing comparison is a specific basis for judging the recommendation. General praise or criticism leaves the criterion unclear.

Question 3No account needed
What would most directly strengthen the construction recommendation?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

A comparison showing why existing rooms cannot meet the demand.. A comparison of capacity and alternatives would address the missing step between rising demand and necessary construction.
