In short
A background detail tells what you did or when; an example shows an action in context; a bare skill claim only names a quality. Je suis organisé is a claim. J’ai créé un tableau pour répartir les demandes gives a concrete action. The example still needs to be truthful; specificity alone does not independently verify it.

This exercise sorts what an answer supplies to the listener. “Background detail” means a specific statement about a role or duration. “Example” adds a situation and an action illustrating a skill. “Unsupported claim” gives a positive quality without that detail.

Move from the quality to an observable action
Je communique bien.I communicate well.
Focus: The listener hears a quality without an example.
Je suis organisé.
I am organised.
Pour une visite de groupe, j’ai préparé un plan avec les trois salles à repérer. For a group visit, I prepared a map showing the three rooms to find.
Focus: The listener can identify what the candidate actually did.
J’ai vérifié les disponibilités avant de proposer une répartition.
I checked availability before suggesting a division of work.
A useful example can be small. Name the situation, your action and an outcome if you genuinely observed one. Do not invent percentages or a successful final result to make the story sound stronger. You can say Je n’ai pas suivi le résultat après mon départ if that is the actual limit of your knowledge.
Keep teamwork visible
If you proposed an idea and another colleague implemented it, describe those two roles. J’ai proposé un modèle, puis l’équipe l’a adapté is a clear contribution. It is more accurate than claiming every step yourself, and it gives the interviewer a concrete follow-up question.
To improve an answer, underline the quality, then ask “what did I do that shows this?” Replace or follow the abstract label with that action. A background detail can introduce the example, but it should not be mistaken for the whole demonstration.
