Keep, move or cut? French paragraph unity quiz

Practise keeping a French paragraph focused with eight revision questions. Separate a useful reason, a relevant limit and a detail that belongs elsewhere.

In short

Keep sentences that help the paragraph do its main job: explain, support or qualify one point. Move a useful second topic to its own paragraph. Cut a detail when it serves neither the paragraph nor the wider task.

Your paragraph’s job: explain why the programme should appear earlier

The centre should publish its programme earlier. Registration sometimes opens before the times are known. The building also has a pleasant courtyard. Participants then find it difficult to choose an activity. Some times, however, depend on confirmation from partners.

The wider task is to suggest practical improvements to the centre. This paragraph focuses on programme timing. Another paragraph could discuss outdoor activities. Use those two levels, the paragraph and the whole response, when you decide what to keep or move.

  1. Question 1No account needed
Which sentence introduces a separate topic?

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

Le bâtiment possède aussi une cour agréable.. The courtyard introduces the centre’s physical space. The other sentences develop the timing problem.

  2. Question 2No account needed
What does the sentence about partner confirmation contribute?

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

A relevant limit on how early every time can be published.. Partner confirmation affects the timing proposal itself. It qualifies the same point rather than opening a new topic.

  3. Question 3No account needed
Choose the strongest replacement for the vague benefit Ce serait mieux.

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

The first option names a benefit tied directly to programme timing: checking hours before registering.

  4. Question 4No account needed
You want to keep the courtyard idea in the wider response. Which new paragraph develops it?

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

The outdoor-workshop proposal gives the courtyard a job of its own. The rain contingency develops that same proposal.

  5. Question 5No account needed
Would adding par ailleurs before the courtyard sentence make it part of the timing argument?

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

It would mark addition, but the courtyard would still need a link to timing.. Par ailleurs signals another point. It does not supply a missing relationship between a pleasant space and publication dates.

  6. Question 6No account needed
Choose a useful qualification that stays with early publication.

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

Confirmed versus pending hours offers a practical response to the partner-confirmation limit.

  7. Question 7No account needed
Which pair forms one coherent paragraph?

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

The second sentence explains the practical consequence of the first. The other pairs leave their connection unstated.

  8. Question 8No account needed
The final task asks only for information about registration dates. What should you do with the pleasant-courtyard detail?

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

Cut it from that response.. For a narrowly defined dates enquiry, the courtyard detail serves neither the paragraph nor the task.
