In short
The imparfait of avoir is j’avais, tu avais, il/elle/on avait, nous avions, vous aviez, ils/elles avaient. Use it for past age, possession and expressions such as avoir faim. Build each form from av- plus the imparfait ending.

How do you conjugate avoir in the imparfait?
Nous avons → av- → nous avions.
We have → av- → we had.
Remove -ons from present avons, then add -ions for the imparfait with nous.

Why does French use avoir where English uses “was”?

J’avais huit ans quand nous avons déménagé.
I was eight when we moved house.
Avais gives the background age. The move is the event, expressed with avons déménagé.
Je n’avais pas de voiture, mais j’avais un vélo.
I didn’t have a car, but I had a bicycle.
In the negative, write je n’avais pas. The ordinary negative of j’avais une voiture uses de voiture.
