In part 1, enter only the stem, with no hyphen: parl, for example. In the other parts, enter only the missing verb form. Every answer is in the imparfait. Accents count, especially in the six forms of être.

1 · Find the stem: remove -ons

  • nous parlons →
  • nous finissons →
  • nous prenons →
  • nous buvons →
  • nous faisons →
  • nous avons →

2 · Être: use ét- and all six endings

  • j’
  • tu
  • elle
  • nous
  • vous
  • ils

3 · Keep the soft g and c

  1. Je une pomme après l’école. (manger)
  2. Tu les cours à neuf heures. (commencer)
  3. Elle tous les samedis. (nager)
  4. Nous dans le jardin. (manger)
  5. Vous par une chanson. (commencer)
  6. Ils souvent en train. (voyager)
  7. Nous dans la rivière. (nager)
  8. Elles à avoir faim. (commencer)

  2. Tu le bus pour aller à l’école. (prendre)
  3. On du vélo après le déjeuner. (faire)
  4. Nous nos devoirs avant de sortir. (finir)
  5. Vous du chocolat chaud. (boire)

  7. Nous ensemble à la bibliothèque. (étudier)
  8. Vous chez vos grands-parents le dimanche. (aller)

Why does the spelling change in some imparfait forms?

The next letter decides
VerbBefore aBefore i
mangerje mangeais / ils mangeaientnous mangions / vous mangiez
commencerje commençais / ils commençaientnous commencions / vous commenciez
étudierj’étudiaisnous étudiions / vous étudiiez

The e in mangeais keeps g soft before a. Before i, g is already soft, so write mangions. The cedilla in commençais keeps the s sound before a. Before i, ordinary c already has that sound. In étudiions, the stem ends in i and the ending starts with i: keep both.

  • Nous prennions le train.Nous prenions le train.

Build from nous prenons, with one n in pren-; do not copy ils prennent.

  • Nous mangeions dehors.Nous mangions dehors.

The extra e belongs before a, not before the i of -ions.

  • Ils commencaient tôt.Ils commençaient tôt.

The ending starts with a, so c needs its cedilla.
