Reflexive verbs in the imparfait: practise je me levais

Build past routines with je me levais, nous nous couchions and je m’habillais. Twelve gaps practise pronouns, endings, elision and negatives.

In short

Put the reflexive pronoun before the imparfait verb: je me levais, nous nous couchions. The verb takes the ordinary imparfait endings; me, te and se become m’, t’ and s’ before a vowel or silent h.

Start from nous nous levons. Remove -ons from the verb to get lev-, then add the ending. Keep the reflexive pronoun that matches the subject. The two copies of nous have different jobs: the first means “we”; the second belongs to se lever.

Quand j’étais au lycée, je me couchais à dix heures.

When I was at secondary school, I used to go to bed at ten.

D’habitude, elle se levait tôt. Hier, elle s’est levée à neuf heures.

She usually got up early. Yesterday, she got up at nine.

The routine uses the imparfait; the particular event uses the passé composé.

How do you form reflexive verbs in the imparfait?

Je m’habillais avant le petit déjeuner.

I used to get dressed before breakfast.

The silent h allows me to become m’.

Nous ne nous dépêchions pas le dimanche.

We didn’t use to hurry on Sundays.

Put ne before the reflexive pronoun and pas after the verb.

The endings follow the subject’s person and number. Il se reposait and elle se reposait have the same ending. Feminine subjects add no extra -e to an imparfait verb. In se lever, keep the plain e of lev- here: je me levais, compared with present-tense je me lève.
