Préconiser or recommander: read a proposal without changing its meaning

Read a short French editorial note using préconiser and recommander. Compare their patterns and distinguish a suggested change from an adopted decision.

In short

Préconiser means “to advocate” or “to recommend” a course of action, often in an analytical or professional text. Recommander is broader: you can recommend an action, a person or a book. Both can introduce a proposed solution; a separate sentence tells you what was decided.

Note de réunion

Read it in English

Readers find the instructions for our workshop too long. Several people asked for an explanation after registering. The team therefore wants to make the document clearer.

Salomé advocates a shorter version, with one instruction per sentence. She thinks this layout will help new participants find the useful information. Karim recommends rereading each instruction aloud to check its clarity. The two proposals complement each other.

For the next session, the team chooses the read-aloud check. The shorter version will be discussed next week. Salomé will prepare an example, but the group has not yet decided to replace the whole document.

recommander + noun + à someone / de + infinitive
