Subjunctive or indicative? Sort expressions before que

Il faut que, je pense que, bien que, parce que: sort sixteen French expressions into those that take the subjunctive and those that take the indicative.

In short

The subjunctive follows expressions of necessity (il faut que), wishes (je veux que), emotions (je suis content que), doubt (je doute que) and some conjunctions (bien que, pour que, avant que). Expressions of certainty and opinion in the affirmative (je pense que, je suis sûr que) take the indicative.

Opinion verbs flip in the negative or question: je pense qu'il a raison (indicative) but je ne pense pas qu'il ait raison (subjunctive), because doubt appears. Espérer is the famous trap: it expresses a wish, yet it takes the indicative.
