Sujet or thème: the topic of a discussion and the theme of a story
Compare sujet and thème through a neighbourhood report, a short story and fixed expressions. See where both words fit and test four useful distinctions.
In short
Un sujet and un thème can both mean a topic. Sujet often names the specific matter being discussed; thème can name an organising or recurring idea. Some expressions have a fixed choice: changer de sujet, le sujet du verbe, un thème musical.
