Common mistakes

Je voudrais or je veux? Four request mistakes to fix

Use je voudrais at a café, keep the final s, and follow it with a noun or infinitive. Compare je veux, order from picture cards and try four questions.

In short

Use je voudrais (“I would like”) to soften a request at a counter or with someone you address as vous. Je veux means “I want” and states a wish directly. Follow either verb with a noun or an infinitive: un café or réserver.
