In short

Autant… autant puts two contrasting judgements in a balanced frame: Autant le début est clair, autant la fin est confuse. It means “the beginning is clear, whereas the ending is confusing”, with extra emphasis on the contrast. Repeat autant at the start of each half.

How does autant… autant work?

Read across: what are we comparing?
First judgementSecond judgementShared topic
Autant le début est clair, autant la fin est confuse. The clarity of two parts
Autant Nora est précise, autant Sami reste vague. How precisely two people explain
Autant le projet est ambitieux, autant les moyens sont limités.The gap between aims and resources

Each half has a subject and a conjugated verb. The subjects can change, as with Nora and Sami, or stay the same. The balancing comes from the repeated opening; the contrast comes from the words you choose, such as clair / confus or ambitieux / limité.

Two judgements about one project

Après une présentation
  1. Nora

Alors, qu’est-ce que tu penses du projet ?

So, what do you think of the project?

  2. Sami

Autant je trouve l’idée intéressante, autant je doute de sa faisabilité.

I find the idea interesting, but I have real doubts about its feasibility.

  3. Nora

C’est le calendrier qui te pose problème ?

Is the timetable the problem for you?

  4. Sami

Oui. Trois semaines, c’est trop court.

Yes. Three weeks is too short.

Sami approves of the idea and doubts the timetable. Those judgements concern different aspects of the same proposal. The second half carries the reservation. Compare the simpler version: Je trouve l’idée intéressante, mais je doute de sa faisabilité. The repeated autant gives the contrast more weight.

The balanced contrast works well in a review or an evaluation: strong opening, weak ending; clear ideas, limited resources. Keep the comma between the two halves and keep both verbs. You can also contrast two periods: Autant j’étais enthousiaste au début, autant je suis déçu maintenant.
