Certains… d’autres: complete a French meeting report

Practise certains, certaines and d’autres in a short French report. Check plural agreement and see how les autres picks out the remaining members.

In short

Certains… d’autres means “some… others”: Certains approuvent ; d’autres hésitent. Use certaines for a feminine plural noun. D’autres has the same spelling for either gender, while following adjectives still agree with the understood noun.

For people, certains can refer to a masculine or mixed group; certaines can refer to women when that is the group established by the context. The same forms refer to things too. In the table, certaines means some activities or questions, rather than some women.

Focus: The remaining members of the known group are identified.

Two people have replied; the others are waiting.

“Some… others” gives two groups, with their size left open. Other members may still be undecided. Les autres is useful when you mean the full remainder: if a list has ten responses and six are summarised, les autres picks out the remaining four.

Complete the report: eight gaps

Follow the cues in brackets. For the adjective gaps, adapt clair, long and précis to the understood noun. For the verb gap, use the present of être. The report moves from people to responses and then to comments, so check the noun again at each turn.

The association suggested several times for the next debates. Among the participants, some prefer mornings; others would like to come in the evening. Several people are still waiting to find out when they will be available. The group will decide next week, after one final discussion.

The written responses are very different. Some are very short; others are longer. Overall, they are clear, but two responses need further explanation. The spoken comments are precise: everyone gives a reason to explain their choice.

Of the ten responses received, six have already been summarised. The remaining ones will be summarised tomorrow. All are being kept for the next meeting. The organiser wants to present everyone’s preferences before suggesting a new time. She will also ask the people who are still undecided to give their views.
